It’s Applicant Wednesday!

Today I want to share a strategy that has helped many of my candidates get past that initial screening call: how to close your interview strong and land that follow-up meeting with the hiring team.

Last week, I chatted with an Insurance Account Manager who was frustrated after several promising first interviews led nowhere. When I asked how she ended these calls, she told me she’d simply say “thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you” – then wait and hope. Sound familiar?

Those final few minutes of your screening interview can make all the difference in whether you move forward or get the dreaded “we’ve decided to pursue other candidates” email.

Here’s how to end your next screening interview with confidence:

  • Take control of the closing: As the interviewer begins wrapping up, smoothly transition with: “This role sounds like a great match for my insurance background, and I’m definitely interested. What happens next in your process?”
  • Check for missing pieces: Thank them for explaining the next steps and then ask: “Is there anything else I should know about the role or team that we haven’t covered?” This often reveals important details that might help you stand out.
  • Get direct feedback: This question can be a game-changer: “Based on our conversation today, do you see any reason why I wouldn’t be a good fit for this role?” If they mention concerns, you can address them on the spot. If not, perfect time to move to scheduling.
  • Make scheduling easy: “I have availability next Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning to meet with the team. Would either of those work for the next interview?” Being specific shows confidence and makes their job easier.

Pro Insight: When hiring managers see you handling the interview this way, they immediately recognize the same skills they need in their account managers – someone who’s proactive with clients and confident with carriers.
