Should I expect to see a targeted resume?

By Kary York

As an insurance recruiter, I review hundreds of resumes each week.  Sadly, most are very generic, often have outdated info, and do not match the job being applied for. Recently I was asked by one of my frustrated insurance hiring managers if I thought it was “unreasonable” to expect to see a targeted resume in today’s job market?

I believe insurance employers have a right to expect a targeted resume from candidates applying for their positions. It shows that the candidate has taken the time to tailor their resume to the role. Targeting gives them the opportunity to show how the requirements of the job and their skills and experience align. Unless you are hiring for an entry level role, you should expect to see highlighted relevant experience, skills, and qualifications that are directly applicable to the role. This could include specific insurance certifications or licenses, knowledge of insurance products and regulations, and experience working with specific insurance software and systems.

When you receive a targeted resume, it shows that the candidate has done their research on your company and understands how they can contribute to its success. Candidates who target their resumes demonstrate their work ethic by going the extra mile to help you understand how their experiences matches your job, they show that they care about their professional work product and are able to communicate their ideas in writing. In short, they are the type of strong performers you want on your team!
