My client is a fast-growing full-service independent insurance agency that is part of a national brokerage. You will manage this $30 Million dollar revenue branch as the Controller, reporting to the Regional CFO. You will work a hybrid schedule in the Seattle office that allows you to manage your team effectively while still maintaining work/life balance.

You will have 6 direct reports who work out of the Seattle office on a hybrid schedule. The team consists of a Senior Accountant who handles month-end financial reporting, and five accounting staff who handle vendor payables, direct bills, agency bills, and producer commissions. The team handles all revenue from P & C and Employee Benefits operations. The Seattle office rolls up its month-end financials to the National office.

You will be a hands-on manager and will supervise the staff’s daily workflow. A small part of your workload will also involve handling tasks such as reconciliations, budgeting, and forecasting. You will oversee all of the month-end financials, auditing, and budgets, and you will work directly with local branch leadership to achieve financial and operational directives. You will also work with the Account Management team for vendor and client issues and will lead a variety of accounting projects that are currently either underway or planned in the next 18 months. The agency is currently involved in various projects to streamline accounting operations such as working on a new automated process for direct billing which will streamline accounting procedures for revenues from Employee Benefits operations. They will also be moving to a new National Agency Management system in 2023.

Key job aspects:

  • Oversight of monthly financial reporting. Creates detailed general ledger schedules associated with the assigned profit centers to assist with audits, surveys, and tax return preparations. Meets deadlines associated with the month-end close process of assigned profit centers.
  • Leads annual budget process and the development of forecasts for for-profit centers throughout the year.
  • Responsible for communicating with customers and vendors to answer questions and resolve discrepancies associated with the profit centers. Serves as the liaison between senior management and producers and the accounting department.
  • Works with senior management including the CFO and others to improve the profitability and growth of the Agency.
  • Partners with other departments to assist with evaluating acquisitions and identify ways to improve operations.
  • Leads annual audit for the Agency financial statements. Arranges for audits of the company’s accounts. Assists auditors and TPAs during audits by providing information and answering questions.

Candidates need to have experience as a hands-on Manager of Accounting staff, 4-year Accounting degree, (a Masters’s or CPA are a plus, but not required), and project management experience leading, managing, and training staff on new Accounting procedures resulting from a database or software changes/upgrades, and the ability to work with key stakeholders in the Sales and Operations departments to solve problems and achieve Corporate Accounting goals in a sales-driven industry.
