If you have experience managing a team of Associate Underwriters at a P & C Insurance Carrier and you excel at training and team building, my Carrier client would like to talk to you.

My client is a Multi-Line Insurance Carrier. This role is in their Commercial P & C Division which serves offices in the Western States. You will be managing 22 to 24 Underwriting Associates that are in their Anchorage, Boise, Seattle, and Portland offices and there are also a handful of full-time remote workers. This group handles Middle Market Premium up to 1 million.

Your focus will be on best practices, metrics, workflow, and staff training/development. You will travel to the regional offices on a rotating basis for a 3 day in-office session with the team each month.  UA’s work in office every Tues and Wed and have the option to work from home the other days. There may also be some full department events to bring everyone together for special trainings.

You will work from home, but you must live West of the Rocky Mountains so that you can travel easily to the regional offices. Zoom is used for video communication and Policy Decisions by Insurity is the Carrier software used. They will be moving to Guidewire in the next 18 to 24 months and you will be heavily involved with the migration to the new system.

Position Summary: Responsible for managing Associate Underwriters enabling them to provide technical support to the underwriting division. Identify and implement process improvements to create operational consistency and efficiency across the enterprise with a focus on key metrics/outcomes. Sets priorities, leads change management, communication, and training to support organizational objectives. Collaborate with Operations/UW Services & Underwriting leaders to verify alignment in work processes and workloads to meet the demands of our Responsible for day-to-day management of Associate Underwriter team including Supervisor(s) and Associate Underwriters including performance and hiring team members.

  • Represent Underwriting in discussions and projects related to strategic initiatives regarding system implementations, workflow, and process improvements.
  • Develop staff through effective coaching and mentoring to maximize individual employee contributions for achievement of personal and company goals.
  • Meet with Associate Underwriters regularly to discuss challenges, results, workload priorities, and workflow changes in the underwriting department.
  • Amend current state workflows and processes as changes warrant and process improvements are implemented.
  • Lead workflows change management and process standardization effort amongst the Pacific Northwest & Alaska offices with active collaboration with Underwriting Leaders and Operations/Underwriting Support.
  • Implement, monitor, and share key metrics and results tied to business objectives.
  • Reviews and analyzes workloads periodically to ensure staffing is adequate to support workload and workload is balanced amongst the staff.
  • Oversee training program for Associate Underwriters including continuous training for new products, rules, systems, and procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership to Associate Underwriters related to filed rates, rules, & forms impacting the business.
  • Work with AUW Supervisor(s) to develop and deploy quality audit process to ensure proper protocols are followed and quality standards are met in collaboration with Operations and Underwriting.
  • Work in partnership with Underwriting Leaders and Operations/UW Services to drive consistent, efficient, and robust workflow to facilitate handling of daily workflow tied to mutually agreed upon objectives.
  • Effectively communicates with agency/broker partners as needed.
  • Collaborate with other business groups including Claims, Loss Control, Operations, IT, & Business Development as needed to support the business.
  • Monitors industry, business, and technical trends; creates and fosters a culture of continuous improvement and process efficiency while maintaining underwriting integrity and fostering strong customer relationships

To be considered, candidates need:

  • BS/BA college degree or equivalent in business/marketing/finance.
  • P & C insurance Carrier supervisory or manager experience
  • Strong business and financial acumen.
  • Ability to effectively influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional and remote teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead self and others through change.
  • Knowledge of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages, and business processes.
  • Analyze complex administrative or business problems, evaluate alternatives, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • One of the following designations is highly desired:
    • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
    • Associate In Risk Management (ARM)
    • Associate In Commercial Underwriting (AU)
